Landsmót Hestamanna

The history of the Landsmót (National Horse Festival) began in 1950 with the first event held at Þingvellir, featuring 133 horses in breeding shows, gæðingakeppni (performance competition), and racing. Initially, there was only one gæðingakeppni category, along with racing and breeding shows. The events were held every four years until 1995, when it was decided to hold them every two years. The first Landsmót under the new schedule was held in Reykjavík in 2000. The competition has grown significantly in both competitions and the number of horses. The first Landsmót in 1950 drew around 10,000 visitors, while record attendance was set in 2008 at Gaddstaðaflöt, with nearly 14,000 participants, visitors, and volunteers. Landsmót hestamanna is the largest sports event in Iceland.
